【TOEIC多益單字加油站】相似字篇--resume、restore、restrain、restrict、refrain

今天戴爾美語多益老師來推薦一組很常出現的多益相似單字--resume、restore、
restrain、restrict、refrain。這些英文單字皆是“re”開頭，依照其英文意思分成兩
組，分別是 (1)resume與 restore ；(2) restrict、restrain與 refrain。其意思一樣，
但用法卻有些不同。今天就來學學這中間的差異性吧！



resume與 restore都是V.，意思都是恢復，但用法有些微的不同：

(1) restore 指某物損壞後的修復或重建使其恢復到原來良好的狀態，

     也可指其他事物受損或喪失後經努力恢復原來狀態。

     例：The government restored confidence in the stock market.

           （政府恢復了股票市場的信心。）

(2) resume 指活動暫停中斷後又開始恢復進行。

     例：The suspended multilateral talk was resumed a year later and finally an 

              agreement was reached.

           （暫停的多邊談判一年後又重新開始，最終達成一項協議。）

restrict、restrain與 refrain都是V.，意思有限制、抑制，用法如下：

(1) restrict 指把某人或物體限制在一定的範圍內，也可用於（以法規）

     限制：restrict …to；在表示約束自己的時候，片語為：restrict sb. to 

     sth./ Ving.

     例：Some facilities in this amusement park may have to be closed at peak 

             times to restrict the number of visitors. 

           （這遊樂園中的一些設施可能在尖峰時刻被關閉以限制遊客的

               數量。）

(2) restrain 抑制、制止、管轄；也可以表示約束自己，控制自己，常

     用片語如下：restrain oneself from sth./Ving.

     例：The patient had to be restrained from walking out alone.

           （這個病人必須被制止獨自走出去。）

     例：We restrained the children from playing by the road.

           （我們制止小孩在路邊玩耍。）

(3) refrain -- refrain from N./ Ving

     例：Please refrain from smoking in public.（請不要在公眾場合抽煙。）

【解析】該題表示秩序要被恢復，表示是狀態被破壞後要復原，因此

   答案要選restore。而resume表示中斷後繼續，所以與該題題意不合。
