【多益常見混淆字彙】rise, arise, arouse, raise

1. rise (v./n.) 上升；升起

   The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

  （太陽從東邊升起、西邊落下）

2. arise (v.)產生、發生 + from

    Most of the disputes arose from lots of discrepancies.

  （多數的爭議皆從許多的歧異開始。）

   →此片語還可以等於stem from、result from、beV attributed to N.

3. arouse (v.) 喚起、激起

   The opposition party employed a wide variety of techniques to arouse public sentiment 

    against the ruling one.

  （反對黨使用了各式各樣的技巧激起人民對執政黨的不滿情緒。）

   → 你還可以說 arouse patriotism/ sympathy/ curiosity/ prejudice

      （激起愛國心/同情心/好奇心/偏見）

4. raise (v./n.) 

   (1)舉起：Please raise your glass.（請舉杯）

   (2)提高：The landlord decided to raise our rent.（房東決定要漲我們都的房租。）

   (3)飼養、養育：How to raise a child is a tough issue for parents-to-be.（如何扶養

       小孩對於準父母而言是一個很艱難的議題。）

   (4)加薪 (n.)：Mark determined to ask his boss a raise.（馬克決心要跟他老闆要求

       加薪。）

解析：

   1. 通常我們只會說「產生」強烈以及矛盾的意見，但我們不會說「喚起」矛盾

       的意見。

   2. 我們被迫「提高」價格。

   3. 廣告價格「上升」了20%，如果要選raised，必須使用被動was raised，表示

     「被提高」。因此若表示價格升高或降低而價格當主詞時，rise使用主動、raise

      使用被動。

【多益常見混淆字彙】affect、effect、infect、defect

      在多益考試中，有很多的選擇題會考學生對於單字的敏銳度，這時候出題老師
      就會把四個 相似的單字放在選項中，測試學生是否會使用這四個單字，以下是
      其中最熱門的 一組，讓你可 以在五分鐘內搞懂這些單字喔!

【字根概念】”~ fect”– do, make

1. affect 作為及物動詞(Vt.)使用，後方須接名詞，意思為：

    (1.) 影響：The approaching typhoon will affect southern Taiwan.

                                            （即將來臨的颱風將會侵襲南 台灣。）

    (2.) （病）感染；侵襲：A high percentage of people in Taiwan are affected by cancer.

                                                                                 （ 在台灣 有很高比例的人口罹患癌症。）

    (3.) 使感動：The novel affected me so much that I can't stop reading it repetitively.

                                          （這本小說讓 我很感動，以至於我忍不住一再閱讀。）

     [你可以這樣記：”af”＝to，”fect”＝do，字面上解釋就是「去做」，去做了就會
            產生影響。]

2. effect也可以當動詞跟名詞使用，但常見為名詞用法：

    (1.) 結果；效果+of：A side-effect is any unwanted effect of medicines that you are taking.

                                                                    （副作 用是任何您正在服用的藥物所帶來不想要的效果。）

    (2.) 影響 + on：According to a recent research, video games may have negative effects 

                             on the brain.（根據最近的研究顯示，電動遊戲可能對於腦部有負面
                             的影響。）

     [你可以這樣記：”ef”＝out，”fect”＝do，字面上解釋就是「在外面做」，在外面做
            的事情 就是要做出效果。]

è相關片語：

                       1.      have a(n) + adj. + effect/impact/influence on sth. 對…有影響

                       2.      take effect 生效 = go into effect, beV in effect

3. infect為動詞，意思為「傳染、染病」：

    The official data showed that more than 20,000 people were infected with dengue in Tainan 

     in 2015.（官方資料顯示台南在2015年感染登革熱人數超過兩萬人。）

     [你可以這樣記：”in”＝in，”fect”＝do，字面上解釋就是「在裡面做」，想想病菌在
            體內產 生作用，就是被傳染、染病了。]

4. defect大多做為名詞，意思為「缺陷、缺點」：

    These toxins can sabotage immune systems, trigger cancers and cause genetic defects.

    （這些毒物   會破壞免疫系統，誘發癌症以及造成基因缺陷。）

    [你可以這樣記：”de”＝apart，”fect”＝do，字面上解釋就是「單獨做、分開坐」，
          想想如果 器官或團體分開運作，而無法協同作用，這樣就會有缺陷。]
