是不是常會碰到一些英文單字，發現由中文意思看起來相同或相近，卻發現當中的英文意思及用法不同，這些”易混淆字”的確不少，而在多益閱讀 PART 1中考題也常常出現這類單字群組，讓你刪掉兩個答案選項後，只剩下兩個選項，卻不知該選哪一個。本篇戴爾美語老師整理易混淆字的組合，想提高英文使用正確性，或者要考多益高分的同學趕快來收錄吧！

1. ill / sick

這兩個形容詞都是指不健全的生理或是心理狀況。

ill通常是比較正式的用法，或是比較嚴重的情況，例如: That patient is ill with pneumonia; this one is sick with a cold(那個病人感染的肺炎，這個病人得了感冒)。

英式用語中，sick是令人作嘔的意思，但美式英文當中就沒有這種限制，sick經常用於以下這些片語: 

• sick at heart (心裡煩悶)
• sick to the stomach (想吐的)
• a sick headache (偏頭痛)
• sick for home (想家)
• sick humor(病態的幽默)
• sick smell (令人想吐的味道)    

其他同義字包括ailing/ indisposed/ nauseated/  infirm。

2. imaginary / imaginative

imaginary指的是虛構的，幻想出來的，例如：Jeff is energetic; his illness is only imaginary.(Jeff很有活力，他的病是幻想出來的)。J.K Rowling is good at making imaginary characters.(J.K. Rowling很擅長虛構人物)。imaginative指的是有想像力的，an imaginative person是很有想像力的人，不同於imaginary man(指的是想像出來的虛構人物)。

3. inability / disability

inability指的是能力不夠，缺乏才能或是方法。如：Her inability to pass a driver’s test annoys her.(她無法通過駕照測驗的事一直惹惱她)。disability指的是缺乏力量或是能力，例如：Jacob was excused from service in the army because of a serious physical disability (由於Jacob的嚴重障礙，Jacob豁免在軍中服役)。inability指的是天生缺乏某種才能，不一定是疾病造成。一個人的inability to speak可能是由於出生時的缺陷，而disability in speaking 可能是來自後天的傷害。

4. incomparable / uncomparable

incomparable指的是無可匹敵的，無比的，以及無法比較的。uncomparable只能指無法比較的。例如: The beauty of Troy’s Helen was said to have been incomparable. (特洛伊的海倫之美是無與倫比的) Bananas and potatoes are uncomparable. (香蕉與馬鈴薯是無法比較的。) incomparable同時是一個名詞，用來指某些字，意義上是絕度的，不能用比較級或是最高級。

5. incapable /unable

這兩字都指的是不具有必須的才能，能力去完成某件特定的事。例如：The speaker was incapable of making himself heard in the rear of the hall. = The speaker was unable to make himself heard in the rear of the hall. (演講人無法使禮堂後面的人聽到他的聲音)。incapable後面加of+Ving，指的是永遠的或是長時期的無能，able後面加to + V，指的是暫時性的無能。例如: This truck is incapable of carrying more than 2 tons (這輛卡車無法載重超過兩噸)。For several minutes he was unable to breathe normally. (有幾分鐘的時間，他無法正常呼吸)。

6. inhabit / prohibit

這兩個字指的是阻礙，妨礙，限制或是禁止。兩字都表示命令式或強制式的行為，inhabit較長使用，例如：His conscience will inhabit his taking advantage of weak person (他的良心不許他佔弱者的便宜。)Fear of cancer, Fred inhabits his continuing to smoke. (因為害怕得癌症，Fred阻止自己繼續抽煙)。prohibit是較正式的字，當政府機構禁用的事，使用prohibit較佳。例如: Library regulations prohibit smoking in the main reading room. (圖書館禁止在閱覽室吸煙)。State law prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages after 8:00 p.m. (聯邦法禁止在晚上八點後賣酒)。
